Learn stand-up comedy in Melbourne over 5-evenings from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, from April 21 to 25, 2024. You’ll get the Hard Knock Knocks comedy manual, our complementary online course, video of your graduating performance, professional headshots for future marketing, and loads of one-on-one coaching from our resident comedy coach, Brad Oakes, our returning alumnus, Nathan Chin, and our guest celebrity comedian, Bev Killick.

Narrated by the legendary comedian Greg Fleet, this online course includes videos examples, audio advice, activities and feedback to ensure you don't feel like a noob on day one. Day 1: Sunday - The Basics, Finding Yourself, Joke Structure and Preparation

Get introduced to the basics of stand-up comedy and the jargon of the comedic industry before jumping into the deep end with your very own mini comedy set. Then, it's time to learn the 'Normal-Normal-Twist' technique, and developing your own original jokes, before trialling them on stage and giving them a polish.

Day 2: Monday - Generating Content and Building Confidence

Learn to gauge your audience and how to recognise and manage taboo topics while learning confidence building/fear smashing techniques. You’ll also get input on your set from our guest comedian, Bev Killick, meet the other Hard Knock Knocks alumni and develop more of your original material.

Day 3: Tuesday - Delivery and Controlling a Room

Learn to write a strong open to your comedy set. Tonight students will also have the opportunity to refine some of their own writing, and learn about the open mic circuit, the Australian comedy festivals, such as Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, as well as life after graduation, with a visit from our returning alumnus.

Day 4: Wednesday - The Close, Graduation Preparation and Photo Headshots

Closing your set strong is this night's goal, as well as putting the extra polish on tomorrow night's graduation performance. You'll also model for professional headshots, that are vital for comedy event posters or even acting jobs!

Day 5: Thursday - Graduation Night and Performance

The online course is great but then going straight into the face to face course with a live performance at the end in front of a live audience is just fantastic. Wow! What a fantastic course. So much more than just learning about comedy. I recommend enrolling in plenty of time so you can do the online self-paced course beforehand. That gave me so much good information, techniques and inspiration to get started on writing some comedy before the group met face to face. Also, if possible, take time off during the course week. I did and I needed all the time to do the homework and work on material to get the most out of the course. The sessions were so good, lots of time to write, practice performing and re-write. There was detailed and fantastic feedback throughout from Brad Oakes and Morry Morgan who are experts and can really help you take your work to the next level. Brad was an amazing MC on the night - fantastic to see him in action. And (included in the course fee) we had Adam take professional photos of us! I felt like a superstar, and he was skilled at getting great shots of me (hee hee, not easy). On the final night, with all the hard work from everyone, we all shone! Doing that performance to a friendly crowd was a life highlight! My friends that saw the show commented after on the high standard of everyone. Was great meeting Max Zadnik our alumni who had lots of great information and did a great show. Our headliner Lawrence Mooney was very generous with information about the industry. And his headlight set was hilarious. At one point I was laughing and crying so hard that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Overall, fantastic value for money, sets you up strongly for comedy but so many other benefits: amazing to do something uncomfortable, gain confidence, learn about stage work and public speaking and dealing with crowds. Highly recommended. (Sorry I was too excited to take any photos but there I am in the graduation photo blocking out Bradford - eeek that could be a career limiting move).

As someone who has had anxiety attacks while speaking in front of large groups, I decided to take a stand-up comedy course for personal development. Honestly, I didn’t want to admit that I enjoyed it, but now that the five-day course is over, I’m sad that it’s finally finished! This was the first time I’ve been in a learning environment where I felt challenged but didn’t want to give up. I also didn’t feel like I was being made to feel too difficult when I struggled. I’ve learned that writing comedy is incredibly strange. You write a line that you think is funny, but then Morry & Brad will tell you it’s not ridiculous enough 😂 It’s the type of writing that high school teachers fear most, and it’s exactly where all the class clowns and weird kids with wild imaginations belong. I would do this course again in a heartbeat. Morry and Brad were amazing with giving constructive feedback, they were encouraging and supportive throughout the whole course, and I’ve made some great connections with my fellow classmates. 🙌

Loved almost everything about this course. (The squiffy tummy before our final performance not so much). Strongly recommend it if you want to strengthen your public speaking, analytical thinking, creative writing, body language or comedy skills. It's certainly not just for comedians in waiting. Best investment I've ever made! I've talked about doing stand up for years, decades even. Stumbled across the hard knock knocks comedy course and thought it'd be a good way to ease into it. It's like a comedy boot camp. Within a week I was performing my first stand up set and I'm now I'm hooked. It's like crack but with less brain damage. Morry and Brad are excellent coaches and really make you feel at ease while they draw out your comedic self and help you build an initial repertoire of solid jokes. I haven't stopped writing since. There's no feeling of the need to compete with your peers; in fact it's actively discouraged. It's all about collaboration and camaraderie and there's a real sense of joint accomplishment after the final night's performance. I've already booked into some new gigs with a few of my classmates from the course and now also have access to a great network of comedians, so I can keep going. I can't recommend this course enough. Especially if you've been thinking about doing stand up but the thought of getting up on stage seems too intense.

Amazing experience! Can’t believe how much we learned in just 4 short evenings… from how to structure a joke to practical exercises in stage etiquette. Lots of hands on guidance but so much room to bring your own voice and personality. I don't aspire to be a Pro Stand-up but I wanted something to shake up my creative writing process and get me out of my comfort zone… and this was perfect. So much fun, such nice guys, a safe space to experiment. Highly recommend!

Hard Knock Knocks is a great experience and a supportive environment to learn how to write jokes and perform standup. My classmates were so much fun to learn with.
