Joe White Comedian

Meet Joe White, November guest comedian

⚠️ Alert! Joe White is the guest celebrity comedian for the November comedy course in Melbourne.

Comedian Joe White has made significant strides in the comedy world, establishing himself as a unique voice in Australian stand-up. Known for his ability to weave cultural insights with humour, Joe has become a favourite at major events, particularly the Perth Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe, where his show ‘Ethiopian and Still Not Hungry’ has consistently drawn large audiences and garnered critical acclaim. His storytelling combines personal anecdotes, sharp cultural observations, and family humour, such as his classic bits about his Ethiopian mother: “If you look at my mum, she’s got like three layers of traditional Ethiopian clothing, right? All year round. African hat. Can’t take her to the movies because she blocks half of the screen.” This blend of genuine, relatable material has set him apart as an influential figure in Australian entertainment.

Joe’s path to comedy was unconventional. Born in Sudan to Ethiopian parents, his family fled to Australia, where they settled in Perth. Initially pursuing accounting, Joe discovered his passion for stand-up and embraced his unique background as comedic fuel, often discussing identity, family, and the immigrant experience. His mother features heavily in his shows, and is often the centre of his jokes, but rather than being the butt, Joe paints her to showcase the lighthearted cultural contrasts between his two worlds.

In 2023, Joe broadened his fan base with an appearance on Network 10’s reality show Hunted, showcasing his resourcefulness and bringing his charm to new audiences. Joe’s journey reflects the hustle and dedication behind his success. His research on local audiences, from Canadian crowds to Melbourne’s multicultural scene, ensures his material connects, demonstrating his adaptability as a performer.

Joe is also a regular feature at the Hard Knock Knocks, having supported graduations, and even appearing in the school’s own six-part TV show, ‘Is This Thing On?‘.
